Google Pigeon

Google Pigeon was an algorithm update introduced by Google in July 2014, designed to enhance local search results and improve the relevance of location-based queries. This update aimed to provide users with more accurate and geographically relevant information when searching for businesses or services within a specific area. The Pigeon update focused on refining the way Google interprets location signals, such as proximity to the user’s search query, business listings, and other local data. It integrated traditional ranking factors with local SEO elements, allowing businesses that optimised their online presence for local searches to gain higher visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs).

One of the key features of Google Pigeon is its emphasis on enhancing the importance of local directories and citation sources. As a result, businesses were, and are still encouraged to ensure consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) information across various platforms like Yelp, TripAdvisor, and so on. Additionally, backlinks from reputable local websites became increasingly important in determining a site’s authority within specific geographical areas.
